JOHANNESBURG – World leaders have started departing South Africa after a successful G20 summit in Johannesburg.

Among them are the UK’s Keir Starmer, Spain’s Pedro Sanchez and Irish Taoiseach, Micheal Martin.

Border Management Authority (BMA) Commissioner Mike Masiapato says departures will continue until Monday.

“As the Border Management Authority, we have been managing the movement of heads of state coming into the country for the G20.”

“The majority of them started arriving from Thursday into Friday and up until Saturday morning. On this basis, we can confirm that over 40 heads of state actually came through into the country,” Masiapato said.

Masiapato said Lanseria International Airport and Waterkloof Air Force Base served as secondary points of entry.

“Some of them came through their own private aircrafts that are more driven by their own Air Force people. And on that basis, they basically stationed them at OR Tambo,” he explained.

Masiapato says the heads of states will return to those airports for departure.
